Thesis Worker Packaging

Thesis Project 30 hp
- Current state and future potential

Scania is currently undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions. Scania Packaging Development is a function within Logistics with the ambition to become a leader in sustainable logistics.

A key team within Scania Packaging Development is the Packaging Assortment & Selection team, which is now looking for a student to work on a thesis project. Scania Packaging Assortment & Selection is responsible for providing standardized and sustainable packaging solutions for shipping parts to/from Scania’s customers/suppliers.

A thesis project at Scania is an excellent way to make contacts for your future career. Many of our current employees started their careers with a thesis project.

Background

In packaging, sustainability is a natural part of our daily work and we have set high and ambitious sustainability goals. To be successful, we must constantly challenge our current state and discover new ways of working.

The process that leads to the creation of a packaging concept is usually initiated by a production unit, which indicates the need for a new/updated packaging solution to the Packaging Assortment & Selection team. However, the trigger events and timing of this process, which are useful to facilitate the tasks of the Packaging Assortment & Selection team, are not clearly defined.

We would like to identify the process stakeholders(production units, suppliers, customers...)  and to investigate how they work when creating the logistical requirements that trigger the creation of a packaging concept.

  • What is the process and the trigger events that lead to a new/updated packaging concept in each production unit? Do we have a common way of working?
  • Can we define a standardized process to align the way stakeholders work and the timing of creating the logistical requirements to initiate a packaging concept?

These are some questions to be answered during this master thesis project, but we are of course open to adaptations to better fit your academic requirements.

Objectives

To define best practices when creating the logistical requirements to initiate a new/updated packaging concept and to define a standardized process that the process stakeholders can follow.

Scope of thesis

  • Current state – Identify the process stakeholders and how they work when creating the logistical requirements for a new/updated packaging concept.
  • Benchmarking – compare the way of working of the different production units
  • Future state – identify best practices and define standardize process to align the stakeholders’ way of working
