Thesis work 30 hp - Efficiency of spray cooling on gears
Introduction:
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania/Traton and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania/Traton career with their degree project.
Background:
Driving the shift towards sustainability dictates developing future products that are efficient to build, operate and have minimum impact on the environment.
The low losses in electric machines compared to internal combustion engines further puts into focus a need for increased efficiency of the powertrain as a whole and its subcomponents. A well designed oil system should maximize utilization of available resources and have optimized consumers to minimize waste. One way of increasing efficiency is to replace splash lubrication of the gearbox in favour of spraying the gears in order to reducing the drag losses. Several parameters of the spray will have an effect on the cooling performance. To better understands this effect this thesis is work is initiated. Students are expected to be present minimally 80% onsite at Scania Södertälje.
Target:
The goal of the thesis work is to understand and develop a method for evaluating efficiency of spray cooling gears both experimentally and mathematically.
Assignment:
Thesis work comprises of two main tasks:
Testing:
- Building test rig
- Performing test
- Evaluate results and test method
- Correlation study
Simulation:
- Develop simulation method to model spray cooling and calculate the impact on heat transfer with high accuracy
- Simulation model that can estimate gear temperature accurately.
