Thesis Project: 30 hp - Battery cell safety characterization

Introduction
Thermal runaway (TR) in lithium-ion battery cells can lead to fires or explosions. Cylindrical battery cells are widely used in battery electric vehicles (BEV) and it is essential to understand TR behavior of cylindrical cells in order to take it into account in designing safe battery systems for BEVs. The state of charge (SoC) level is a critical factor influencing intensity and characteristics of TR reactions.
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Objective
The goal of the master thesis project is to better understand the effect of SoC level to the safety performance of a cylindrical cell, e.g., TR onset temperature, gas release and heat release amounts, temperature distribution, mas loss.

Job description
In this project, the thesis worker will perform in-depth analysis of existing safety test data using data analysis tools such as Python and MATLAB to analyze the effects of SoC levels on key safety parameters. If time permits, findings will be validated through hands-on experiments or by performing multi-physics simulations to further explore TR behavior.
