Software Engineer - Optimization & Algorithms
At TRATON Group, we believe that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. Together with our brands we can make the future of transportation more sustainable - Let´s make a difference together.
The TRATON AB office, located in Södertälje, consists of experienced colleagues with various backgrounds and nationalities from all TRATON Group brands. We enjoy solving strategic problems cross functional and cross brand in the TRATON Group. We strive for a climate where opinions and knowledge are openly shared within and between teams and we welcome new ideas in order to create dynamic synergies.
With its brands Scania, MAN, Volkswagen Truck & Bus and International, TRATON Group is one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. Its offering comprises light-duty commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses. At TRATON, you are an important part of something bigger. Joining us means gaining access to the ins and outs of the entire transportation industry. As part of a global team of industry experts, you get to think bigger, experience more, and reach further. Being bigger also means being stronger. Together with our brands, we have the collective power to transform transportation. Find out more: www.traton.com
Role Summary
We develop software that is central to how transport companies plan and operate electrified heavy-duty truck fleets. Our systems are designed to be used daily as part of our customers’ core transport operations, and directly influence how planning and execution decisions are made.
Our mission is to create the shift to a sustainable transport system through better planning and use of transportation resources. The tools we build are key enablers of that shift.
At the core of the system is optimization logic related to well-studied but computationally hard problem classes such as electric vehicle routing, resource-constrained routing, and large-scale re-planning. These problems are addressed using a combination of algorithmic techniques, heuristics, decomposition methods, and domain-specific knowledge.
Solutions often start as small scripts or prototypes and are evolved into production-grade cloud services. The product is already running, with customer release planned for 2026.
Job Responsibilities
- Design and implement optimization algorithms for single-vehicle routing and re-planning
- Contribute to fleet-level optimization in performance-critical components
- Work with problems where data structures, algorithmic complexity, and performance are central
- Combine vehicle models, charging infrastructure constraints, and geospatial data into solvable formulations
- Build and operate backend services deployed to the cloud and improve their production behaviour
- Influence algorithm design, architecture, and system behaviour in production
Who You Are
You are a software engineer with a solid background in computer science.
You are comfortable with:
- Algorithms and data structures
- Reasoning about complexity and engineering trade-offs
- Translating theoretical ideas into code
- Experience with optimization, algorithm competitions, competitive programming, or similar backgrounds is highly relevant. Equally important is the ability to work constructively with others and contribute to shared technical decisions.
This role is a good fit if you:
- Want to work deeply with algorithmically hard problems in real systems
- Care about performance, correctness, and long-term maintainability
- Want real influence over technical direction and solutions
- Value working with skilled, considerate colleagues
This Is Us
The team has full ownership of technical decisions and direction, including algorithmic approaches, system architecture, and technology stack. The stack is chosen by the team and evolves as the product matures.
Our problem domain is informed by ongoing research. We collaborate closely with academic partners and use scientific literature as input to practical engineering decisions. You are not expected to know everything on day one, but you are expected to engage deeply and learn continuously.
TRATON AB Offers
We offer a dynamic, flexible workplace with hybrid work options, including Scania Sergel and Midway hubs. With a structured development plan and courses, TRATON supports your career growth both locally and internationally.
Benefits include training at our health center Gröndal or wellness allowance, bonus, flexible hours, and company car leasing. The group also hosts events for employees and their families, and Stockholm residents.
Application
Your application should include a CV and any relevant certificates. We welcome all applicants and strive for diversity in our recruitment processes.
Apply as soon as possible, no later than 2026-01-31. Screening will take place on an ongoing basis during the application period. Logical and personality tests may be used as part of the selection process, and a background check may be required for this role.
