Master thesis - 30 Credits- Investigate how to use AI tools in a sustainable way

Introduction:

Scania’s aim is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system, creating a world of mobility that is better for business, society, and the environment. Scania is facing a transformation journey, where we are going from a product driven to a transport solution driven company. In this transformation journey, software and data will shape our future business model. Scania is dedicated to keeping its position as a leading transport solution provider while decarbonizing the transport sector. Scania's three pillars to maintain its position are: energy efficiency, alternative fuels and electrification, and smart and safe transport.

Background:

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from IT systems supporting road transport are increasing along with digitalization. To ensure that the negative climate impact of our IT systems is minimized, we calculate GHG emissions from upstream activities, operations, downstream activities, and end-of-life. GHG reporting enables measuring and/or comparing climate impact of a product or a service, or a new tool. Knowledge on how these values relate to real world environmental capacity is key.

AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot are used by more people and companies. Compared to the normal web search, AI search is causing times of more electricity. The total energy consumption and carbon emissions from these tools should not be ignored.

Target:

Investigate how we should use AI tools in a sustainable way. The report that finalizes the thesis has the aim to spread the result and knowledge around the organization and serve as an important building block in the increased fact base for AI development activities as well as supporting marketing, operational, and commercial activities.

Assignment:

The main objective of the thesis is to explore how to use AI tools in an environment friendly way, for example, in a way of less energy consumption and carbon emissions. The student will conduct an extensive investigation to get a holistic view of the different areas affecting the total GHG emissions generated by AI tools.
