Thesis 30hp - Validation Of Autonomous Simulation Models

Here is an opportunity to familiarize with Scania as a company and future employer while getting to work with the coolest technology of the future, contributing to our move towards sustainable autonomous transport solutions!

Background:
Development of autonomous vehicles are heavily reliant on simulation. Doing all testing in vehicle is not only costly and inefficient but also impossible given the scale of testing needed before each release of new software. A number of laps around the globe would be necessary to cover all variants and cases.  It is said that “All models are wrong but some are useful” and this is true also for the simulation models that always will have an error, and the usefulness of the results depend on how good this error is known.

Goal:
The overall aim of this Master’s thesis is to increase the understanding of the validity of the simulation models for Scania’s Autonomous Vehicles. If the results are to be used as a part of an argumentation of why the product is safe, we also need to know how to quantify the errors and mitigate this using test design combining vehicle tests and simulation.

Assignment:
The thesis starts with a literature review to define state-of-the-art from what is currently available. Then the thesis will most likely involve some experimentation with tests in vehicle and simulation. Depending on outcome as well as your focus area this should then result in an understanding about the different models current strengths and limitations. This can in turn help developing a method for how this work can be done continuously in the future as well as how to use the results from the simulation as a compliment or instead of test in vehicle.
