Thesis Project: 30 Credits A Research Study on Cross-Platform Challenges in XR Development

Background

Scania is currently undergoing an exciting transformation from a traditional truck manufacturer to a provider of complete sustainable transport solutions.

If you're seeking a dynamic work environment for your thesis, Scania Production System focuses on continuous improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its production processes. With the rise of automation, digitalization, and the smart factory concept, we are now at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution.

The Smart Factory Lab at Scania is an experimental test environment that explores, assesses, and pilots modern technologies before they are adopted in Scania’s production processes. The lab focuses on digitalization and automation with the target of achieving autonomous material handling, reduction of quality deviations, and shortened introduction time. We are looking for motivated and creative students to join our Smart Factory Lab for their master thesis.  You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where you can test and validate modern technologies, methods, and solutions in close collaboration with our internal and external stakeholders

Assignment

In the rapidly evolving world of Extended Reality (XR), one of the core challenges developers faces are the high dependency on hardware. While creating immersive experiences, developers must tailor their solutions to the unique requirements of various platforms such as mobile devices, tablets, Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, and Mixed Reality (MR) devices like Vision Pro, HoloLens, Meta Quest, and XR Elite.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the challenges posed by hardware variability in XR development and explore strategies for optimizing cross-platform deployment.

KEY Questions

How does the difference in hardware between devices make it harder to scale XR solutions, and what can developers do to overcome these challenges for wider use?
What are developers' common performance challenges when optimizing high-end and low-end devices?
What strategies and optimizations can be employed to ensure consistent performance and user experience across diverse XR hardware platforms?
