Thesis Project 30 hp - Can we measure the remaining life of a battery?

Introduction

Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Background
The future for the transport sector is lies in electrification, with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) leading the way. One of the key challenges of BEVs is the high cost of batteries. All effort is thus done in order to maximise the  lifespan of the batteriesof a battery. In order to achieve this, accurate measurement of battery health is essential. Just as a blood sample can provide critical health information for a patient, imagine how ideal it would be to have a similar method for assessing the health of a battery. This project aims to bring that vision closer to reality.

Objective
The aim of this master´s thesis project is to develop methods for measurement of degradation products in the battery electrolyte.

Job description
This experimental project aims  at developing methods for characterizingsation degradation products in battery electrolyte with a focus on. quantifications by using GC/MS. In order to quantify the degradation products by GC they need to be airborne. They should also be separated from other products and the GC/MS should not be destroyed A significant part of the project involves conducting a literature review in combination with scientific discussions in order to find suitable sample preparation methods. The second phase of the project will involve testing, verifying or refining these new ideas in the lab.
