Thesis Project: 30 hp - Simulation and Optimization of Production Flows

Introduction
Take the chance to put theoretical knowledge into practice by creating simulation models and investigate how the bottlenecks affect the output in our production lines.
A thesis project at Scania offers not only hands-on experience but also a direct path to a future career with us. Many of our employees began with a thesis, and you could be next.

Background
Few manufacturing lines combined with many different parts create a complex reality. To optimize the usage of our physical flow we need to understand the entire picture and in so the bottleneck for all parts. Simulation is a cost-effective way to investigate and test improvements for this.

Objective
The objective of this master thesis is to analyze, simulate and optimize our production flows. You will be responsible for gathering and analyzing data on the current system, creating simulation models of these flows and identifying the bottlenecks and suggesting potential improvements.

Job description
You will perform a detailed analysis of the current production system. Work closely with the cross functional teams to gather insights and data of the production environment. Build a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) model of the production line to identify the key areas of inefficiencies or capacity constraints that could create bottleneck. Run different scenarios to assess impacts of parameters like Process time, Machine availability and buffer sizes on the throughput of the line. Based on the simulation data, propose actionable improvement to handle bottlenecks and optimize our production flow.
Deliverables:

  • A simulation model of the production lines.
  • Recommendations for changes to improve performance, optimize processes and reduce bottlenecks.
