Thesis Student - 30 credits –  Development of a design methodology for freeze-robust sensor manifolds

A thesis project at TRATON provides an excellent way of getting to know the organisation and to build your own network. Many of our current employees started their careers with a thesis project. If you would like to join a team with established expertise in exhaust aftertreatment system and contribute to the understanding of future demands on the existing products, we welcome you to take on this thesis project.

Background

TRATON strives to be the leading company, both with its existing and developing products, for current and future demands to achieve low to zero emissions. For internal-combustion engine vehicles, achieving low emissions relies heavily on the efficiency of the exhaust aftertreatment system. An essential part of this system is the reductant delivery system, which supplies urea-water solutions, such as AdBlue, DEF, or ARLA 32, to enable NOx reduction. The reductant delivery system comprises several components, including dosing units, pumps, reductant tanks and hoses. In non-purged reductant delivery systems, residual reductant may freeze under low ambient temperatures. The resulting volumetric expansion can generate mechanical stresses and potentially damage system components, including sensors. Therefore, designing manifolds capable of accommodating this expansion is critical to ensuring system robustness. This thesis project aims to address this challenge by investigating the hydraulic, thermal and mechanical behaviour of sensor manifolds under freezing conditions, through numerical simulations and testing.

Assignment descriptionThe objective is to develop a systematic design methodology for freeze-robust sensor manifolds. The student will investigate existing manifold concepts and competitor solutions to identify potential design approaches. Based on the findings, two manifolds will be developed to accommodate two different sensors that are already in-house.The designs will be evaluated through numerical simulations, in collaboration with TRATON’s simulation team, and experimental testing and set up logging (analog and SENT) following established testing protocols, including standard component freeze-robustness tests. Additional testing methods may be explored where relevant. The knowledge gained throughout the project will contribute towards formulating a design methodology applicable to future manifold development.Previous CAD experience in CATIA is not required for this project.
