Thesis worker 30 hp - Filtering the future: Advances in  particulate matter filtering for H2 engines

Introduction

Thesis work is an excellent way to get to know TRATON/Scania closer and build relationships for the future. Many of our employees began their TRATON/Scania careers with a degree project.

Background

TRATON/Scania is undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions. One important part in this strive is the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel. Hydrogen produced from renewable sources such as wind- or solar power offers an alternative to battery electric in applications where for example long range and fast fuelling are important features. The hydrogen could be used either in fuel cells generating electricity or directly in specially adopted internal combustion engines (H2-ICE). The latter is a fairly mature technology which will be an important part in the implementation of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles.

Hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines provide a promising pathway towards carbon-free transportation. While particulate matter emissions are lower than those from conventional diesel engines, the emitted particles are primarily composed of engine oil-derived ash and are found in the ultra-fine size range. These characteristics introduce new challenges, as exhaust aftertreatment systems and regeneration strategies were originally designed for soot-dominated exhaust streams. Consequently, ash accumulation, filtration efficiency, and long-term filter performance under hydrogen engine-like exhaust conditions must be better understood to support the development of robust aftertreatment solutions capable of meeting future emission requirements.

Objective

This Master's thesis focuses on exhaust aftertreatment systems, with particular emphasis on particulate filters, filtration mechanisms, and filtration efficiency. The work will investigate the treatment of particulate matter generated under hydrogen-fuelled internal-combustion-engine-like conditions using laboratory-scale experiments. This novel and rapidly evolving research area aims to advance the understanding of particulate filtration processes and contribute to the development of high-efficiency aftertreatment solutions for heavy-duty vehicles to meet the European emission regulations.

Job description

The assignment will cover the whole process from idea to design of experiments and testing. It will include both theoretical and hands-on work in the laboratory with a dedicated world class test rig as well as the use of advanced characterization techniques. The assignment involves contacts with different experts both at TRATON/Scania and KTH.

We expect you as a candidate to have a curious mindset and a will to see things through from idea to final product. You will work in a dedicated team of driven experts from many aspects of engines and exhaust aftertreatment technologies.

The work will be performed mostly at TRATON Materials Technology in Södertälje and some work at Process Technology at KTH.
