30 hp – Use road condition information to improve performance of emergency brake for heavy vehicles

Introduction
The Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) group at Traton develops key functionality for all Scania vehicles. A thesis project at the group and Traton is a great opportunity to work on the forefront of ADAS development and an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life.

Background

Today’s heavy-vehicle customers demand more advanced driving assistance systems. These functions are very important to make the traffic environment more safe and reduce cognitive load on the driver. One important part is the Advanced Emergency Brake (AEB) system. That will brake the vehicle and avoid / mitigate the severity of any collision. The overall performance of the AEB system may be increased by having an accurate estimation of road friction, road slope etc.

Objective

To implement a road friction estimation model and a road slope estimation model for heavy vehicles and evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the models.

Job description
Implement a road friction estimation model for heavy vehicles and a road slope estimation model. Evaluate the accuracy of the implemented models for different vehicle types, i.e. a rigid truck and a tractor with trailer. Investigate how sensitive the models are to parameters such as vehicle mass and sensitivity to disturbances in sensor inputs.

The algorithm should be evaluated in a vehicle on a test track. The implementation will be done in MATLAB.

Education
Master student (civilingenjör) in mechatronics, vehicle engineering or similar. The student should preferably have a profile in vehicle dynamics, programming.
