Thesis work: 30hp - Investigation of surface functionalization parameters for axial thrust bearings
Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.
Background
Scania is pushing the limits of our current products and surface technologies are required to provide solutions where regular surface treatment processes are no longer able to provide the required performance. Surface functionalization (laser texturing) is a relatively novel method for increasing load bearing capacity in thrust bearings. The project aims at using different parameters of surface texture and investigate which parameters are more important for improving load bearing capacity.
Objective
The main goal is to determine the effect of different surface texturing parameters (depth, lay, size of texture, etc.) on the load bearing capacity of thrust washers.
Job description
The thesis is highly experimental. The student shall:
- Do an in-depth literature review and state of the art.
- Develop an appropriate test method and test matrix for the required investigation.
- Choose and design different surface texturing patterns to manufacture.
- Use microscopy to characterize the textured surfaces.
- Test the different texture patterns and determine the effect of each one on friction.
- Use microscopy to investigate wear mechanisms
- Analyse the results and provide insight on the texturing parameters effect on friction and wear
