Thesis work: 30hp Performance of Laser-Textured Surfaces for Engine Components Exposed to Cavitation

Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Background
Surface funcionalization has seen quick developments with the introduction of laser texturing. This technology can be used to improve surface properties of components and increase their performance when other aspects cannot be changed or have already been optimized. Cavitation erosion is a surface phenomenon that can benefit from laser texturing but its effects, benefits and applicability must be studied. Fun4Mel, a consortium project with partners such as KTH, LTU, Siemens and Lasernova, has been set up for this purpose, with cavitation being one of its main topics of interest.

Objective

To investigate the performance of different surface texture patterns against cavitation erosion of metallic surfaces, understand the associated damage mechanisms, and determine the most beneficial textures. This knowledge will help the development of engine components.

Job description

The thesis is highly experimental but will include some theoretical work. The required activities include:

  • Experiments with a lab-scale ultrasonic test rig
  • Profilometry/Confocal microscopy for characterization of textures and wear
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for analysis of wear and fracture patterns
  • Data analysis
  • Literature Review
  • Possibility of integration with simulations of fluid dynamics with different textures
