Thesis work 30 ECTS - Stress Analysis of Rear Axle Housings
Introduction
A thesis project is an excellent opportunity to establish closer contact with Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today’s employees began their Scania careers with their thesis work.
Background
With over 125 years of industry experience, Scania strives to be a world-leading provider of sustainable transport solutions. As part of this mission, we develop and manufacture world-class trucks and buses, with chassis components produced at Scania Ferruform in Luleå.
One of our main products is rear axle housings. During the manufacturing process, a significant amount of heat is introduced during welding, which causes stresses to build up in the final product. The stress lead to changes in the product and a shift in its centerline during the process. To restore the centerline, the rear axle housings are straightened. Over time, the product has evolved, resulting in an increased need for straightening and additional work.
Objective
Investigate where in the process the stresses that alter the centerline arise and are stored. Identify where and how the process needs to be changed to minimize the need for straightening.
Assignment Description
- Describe the process up to and including the straightening operation
- Investigate the amount of energy introduced into the product at each process step
- Analyze which process steps contribute to the centerline shift
- Identify the steps with the greatest impact
- Propose changes that reduce the need for straightening
