Within TRATON, we include MAN, Scania, Volkswagen Truck & Bus, and International. As part of a global team of industry experts, you get to think bigger, experience more, and reach further. Together, we have the power to transform transportation.
Our values – customer first, respect, team spirit, responsibility, and elimination of waste – are at the heart of everything we do.
Role Summary
We are looking for a tech savvy, passionate and strategic Senior Data Scientist to join our global Battery & Charging journey at TRATON R&D! Are you excited by the idea of using data to shape the future of electric mobility? Do you thrive on transforming complex technical domains into intelligent, scalable solutions? Do you love building full-stack data products just as much as empowering others to use them?
We’re on a mission to create a unified and modern data foundation in the Battery and Charging area in Traton Group R&D. This is your opportunity to make a massive impact—driving strategic AI/ML adoption and self-service analytics for engineers, data consumers and decision-makers across the electrification area.
Your role within our ecosystem
You will join the Global Analytics Enablement team—a mission-driven group accelerating data maturity across Battery & Charging R&D. We partner with domain teams to create clean, contextualized, and reusable data products that support innovation in electric vehicle charging, battery development, simulation, and more.
You’ll work closely with data engineers, analysts, product owners, domain experts in battery and charging, architects, and data consumers across brands. You’ll also collaborate with central initiatives to shape data architecture, promote standards, and enable analytics at scale. This is both a hands-on and strategic role: You’ll prototype, productionize, mentor and evangelize.
You will be responsible for
- Identifying and translating domain needs into technical requirements scoping and building scalable solutions that enable ML, simulation and cross-functional analytics.
- Designing scalable, efficient, quality data science tools that our expert engineers can use in their operations.
- Co-leading our transformation roadmap, helping us evolve toward AI-readiness across our area.
- Creating clarity around complex systems through visualisations, dashboards, documentation, and storytelling.
- Mentoring analysts, engineers, and data savvy domain experts in both technical skills and supporting a culture of collaboration and learning.
Desired qualifications
- M.S. degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Statistics or related fields such as Behavioural Science, Economics, Sociology, or other disciplines with a strong foundation in quantitative or computational methods.
- 6+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or full-stack data practitioner in a technical domain, with a proven delivery track record.
- General machine learning expertise: regression, classification, clustering, time-series analysis, Bayesian methods, and survival analysis.
- Production-level engineering skills in Python/SQL/Scala, including testing, version control, scheduling, and documentation.
- Advanced SQL skills and experience working with large, complex datasets.
- Professional habits around model validation, performance tracking, and reproducibility.
- Strong foundation in statistics: power analysis, significance testing, t-tests, ANOVA, etc.
- Experience with distributed data processing and modelling (batch and streaming).
- Experience building and operationalizing data and ML pipelines.
- Familiarity with MLOps tooling (e.g., Vertex AI, MLflow, or similar).
You’ll Thrive Here If You...
- Carry a genuine passion for data, analytics, and building tools that enable others to do their best work.
- Have solid stakeholder collaboration and relationship-building skills.
- Have strong communication skills, especially in visualizing and explaining analysis clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Are curious about how AI/ML—like embeddings, semantic layers, LLMs and agents—can improve real-world technical work.
- Enjoy working with smart, humble people across functions, brands, and borders.
Bonus Points If You...
- Have worked with time series data, telemetry or similar real-world measurement systems.
- Understand data architecture patterns (information models, data mesh, lakehouse, modular pipelines).
- Have helped teams adopt modern data/ML platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, DuckDB, LangChain, etc.).
- Passionate about designing meaningful data experiences - making data truly matter to people.
- You don’t have to check every box—if you're excited about this role and believe you could grow into it, we are excited to get to know more about you.
Why This Team?
We’re a small but impactful enablement group with a clear mission: “To ensure that every decision in Battery & Charging can be empowered by data.” You’ll work alongside engineers across TRATON Group to standardize, simplify, and supercharge how we use data—from rigs to dashboards, from reports to edge deployed ML models. We build bridges across brands and make it easier to go from creating data to making insight. We combine technical excellence with servant leadership. We value radical candor, psychological safety, shared ownership and continuous learning.
If we sound like your kind of team—come join us in shaping the future of electrified transport!
