Thesis Work 30hp Model-Based Design for Gas Engine Fuel Rail

Introduction
Reducing the environmental impact of road transportation is a critical challenge for the automotive industry. One promising solution lies in the use of biofuels such as biogas, which can cut CO emissions by more than 100% when considering the reduction of atmospheric methane. At the core of biogas-powered internal combustion engines is the fuel rail, a key component influencing engine performance, efficiency, emissions and durability.

Background
Our team at Scania develops fuel system components for conventional powertrain running on both traditional fuel like diesel and alternative fuels such as CXG/LXG. Scania’s gaseous fuel engines are already on the market, offering a robust solution for sustainable transport. As part of our ongoing development, we are now looking to enhance our design and simulation capabilities by creating a model-based design for the fuel rail to support product development.

Objective

The goal of this master thesis is to develop a model-based design for the gaseous fuel rail by integrating various factors such as geometry, fluid properties and boundary conditions.

Job Description

The student will be based at Scania R&D in Södertälje and gain first-hand experience working at a leading commercial vehicle OEM. The thesis work will include:

  • Literature review on model-based design and gaseous fuel rails
  • Performing relevant calculations, simulations and tests
  • Development of model-based design
  • Validate the model to correlate with test data
