This position is within one of TRATON’s companies.

Thesis work: 30 hp - 1D Aftertreatment Simulation for Euro VII Engine

Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Traton and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania/Traton career with their degree project.

Background
Traton is developing the next-generation Engine and aftertreatment system platforms to meet Euro VII emission legislation. These platforms are key parts of the Conventional Powertrain domain, focusing on high-efficiency internal combustion engines with net-zero emissions.
This master thesis will support for developing advanced 1D simulation models for the aftertreatment system for Euro VII engine. The work will contribute to the improvement of predictive accuracy for catalyst performance — essential for achieving near-zero emission targets.

Objective
• Develop a 1D aftertreatment simulation model using AVL Cruise M.
• Establish model parameters based on catalyst test data, reaction kinetics and catalyst characterization.
• Perform laboratory catalyst testing and characterization (SCAT rig) to obtain kinetic and performance data for model calibration.
• Analyse and validate the model against engine-test and EATS-bench data.
• Package the model into an FMU (Functional Mock-up Unit) for integration into Scania’s Virtual Truck and Bus system.
• Summarize findings and provide recommendations for model improvement and calibration strategy.

Job description
The work will include:
• Literature review and familiarization with Traton/Scania’s 1D modelling frameworks (AVL Cruise M).
• Catalyst testing and characterization using SCAT rig and catalyst characterization model parameterization.
• Model setup, calibration, and result evaluation.
• Collaboration with engine test and aftertreatment development teams.
• Data analysis, visualization, and documentation of results.

This thesis will be hosted in Material technology, with a close work with simulation and catalyst specialists within the EAT Performance and Simulation domain.
