Thesis work 30hp - FCEV model optimisation for relevant driving missions

Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way of getting into contact with Scania and to build relations for the future. Many of today’s employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Background

Fuel cell technology, and its application into heavy duty vehicles, enables heavy transports with zero tailpipe emissions, and is therefore a possible way towards a sustainable transport system. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV:s) enables, e.g. extended range compared to battery electric vehicles. However, the fuel cell in itself is a sensitive sub-system of an FCEV, and demands therefore optimization of both energy management and hybridisation strategies, in order to achieve an optimal driving performance and life-length.

Objectives
The objective of this master thesis project is to optimise an FCEV model for relevant driving missions, in order to estimate suitable FCEV model parameters for minimised hydrogen consumption, maximised fuel cell life-length and minimised total cost of ownership (TCO).

Job description
The project starts off with a literature study on different fuel cell technologies, battery technologies and energy management strategies. The project will thereafter, by implementing results from previous studies as input data, optimise an FCEV model. The output data is then to be analysed to provide an overview of how various vehicle configurations and control strategies are able to achieve the demands of various driving missions, in order to draw some conclusions on what the fuel cell trucks of the future might look like.
