Thesis work 30hp - Test method development for gas engine components

Introduction
Reducing the environmental impact of road transportation is a critical challenge for the automotive industry. One promising solution lies in the use of biofuels such as biogas, which can cut CO₂ emissions by more than 100% when considering the reduction of atmospheric methane. Vital to the performance of the of the biogas-powered internal combustion engines is the regulator, a key component influencing engine performance, efficiency and durability.

Background
Our team at Scania develops fuel system components for conventional powertrain running on both traditional fuel like diesel and alternative fuels such as CXG/LXG. Scania’s gaseous fuel engines are already on the market, offering a robust solution for sustainable transport.

As part of our ongoing development, we are now looking to enhance our test method for life time durability evaluation of the regulator.

Objective

The goal of this master thesis is to analyse and evaluate the current lifetime validation methods, cross referencing real-life field data and proposing a new and improved test method for the regulator.

Job Description

The students will be based at Scania R&D in Södertälje and gain first-hand experience working at a leading commercial vehicle OEM. The thesis work will include:

  • Literature review on currently used ISO-standards and OEM-specific requirements
  • Performing relevant statistical analysis on field
  • Development of a new test method that replicates field conditions more accurately
