Objective

The objective of this master thesis is to investigate the mechanical behavior of lithium-ion battery cells through compression and bending tests for different state of charge (SoC). The study aims to enhance the understanding of how force-displacement characteristics and deformation behavior of the cell under excessive mechanical stress impacts battery safety, durability, and performance. By combining experimental testing with data analysis, the project seeks to contribute valuable insights to the development of safer energy storage systems for sustainable transport applications.

About the Position

Are you passionate about sustainable transport and eager to apply your academic knowledge in a real-world industrial setting? Join us at TRATON for an exciting master thesis project focused on the mechanical characterization of lithium-ion battery cells.

As a master thesis student, you will contribute to the development of future transport solutions by investigating the mechanical behavior of battery cells. You will work closely with the TGRBSCT group, which specializes in cell testing. You will be part of a cross-functional team within TRATON Group R&D, working at Södertälje. The team collaborates closely with internal experts in cell development and simulation. You will be supported by experienced supervisors from TRATON.

Thesis Scope

Your project will include:

  • Conducting a comprehensive literature review
  • Performing mechanical tests on battery cells for different state of charge (SoC)
  • Analyzing and interpreting test data
  • Comparing results across the test parameters
  • Presenting your findings in a comprehensive report and oral presentation at TRATON

Who You Are

You are a curious and motivated individual with a solid academic background and a strong interest in sustainable technologies and energy systems. You thrive in interdisciplinary environments and enjoy tackling complex challenges through testing, data analysis, and innovation.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Enrollment in the final year of a relevant Master’s program
  • Basic understanding of battery operation and testing (prior work experience in battery testing is meritorious)
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python
  • A genuine interest in both theoretical and practical research
  • Passion for energy storage, batteries, and sustainable transport solutions
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken
  • Start date for the thesis project: January 2026 (Start date and timeline to be agreed upon between TRATON, the candidate and the academic institution)

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds – your unique experience and perspectives are valuable to us.

Application

Your application should include a CV, personal letter outlining your motivation and interest in the thesis and transcript of grades.

Apply as soon as possible, but no later than October 15, 2025. Screening and selection will be conducted continuously throughout the application period. Please note that a background check may be required for this role. This role is a part of TRATON Group R&D, located in Södertälje, Sweden
