Thesis worker 30 hp - Optimization of a Hydrodynamic Retarder
Master’s thesis, 30 credits – Optimization of a Hydrodynamic Retarder
Introduction
Do you want to help shape the next generation of braking solutions for heavy vehicles?
A hydrodynamic retarder provides powerful auxiliary braking, reducing wear on the wheel brakes while also contributing to the overall safety and robustness of the vehicle’s braking system. Together, we want to push this technology further.
In this master’s thesis, you will work alongside our senior engineers to explore new concepts, challenge existing solutions, and turn engineering ideas into hardware that can be evaluated and tested.
The team and our responsibilities
The Auxiliary Systems team at TRATON R&D develops components and systems for advanced drivelines across the TRATON Group. Our responsibilities include Power Take-Offs (PTOs) and Retarder.
Our team consists of design engineers, test engineers, and VCT leaders working in an agile and cross-functional environment together with R&D, Production, and Purchasing. We develop and validate solutions from early concept phases to customer-ready products for both conventional and electric drivelines.
Objective
The goal of this master thesis is to improve the current hydrodynamic retarder through new hardware concepts and test methods. Together with our engineers, you will identify opportunities within key subsystems, develop solutions, and evaluate their potential. The exact scope will be refined together based on the most relevant technical challenges and your interests.
Job description
You will be based at TRATON R&D in Södertälje, with the possibility of remote work when suitable for the work.
During the thesis, you will:
- Build an understanding of hydrodynamic retarders and the physical principles behind them
- Develop and evaluate new concepts
- Create CAD models of proposed solutions
- Plan and perform relevant calculations and analyses
- Validate concepts using test data
- Work closely with TRATON engineers and contribute to ongoing product development
This is an opportunity to take on a real engineering challenge, test your ideas, and contribute to the development of future heavy-vehicle braking systems.
